Walker was born in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. She is of African American background, and an American. She has parents named Harvey Welker who is Native American as well as Julie Welker who is African-American. The father of the family is an engineer while her mother is an estate agent. Walker received her schooling in the Germantown Friends School located in Philadelphia's Germantown region, where she was able to graduate in 1994. She then attended Harvard College, where she received a Bachelors in Arts degree. Welker has been married for over 20 years to John Hughes who is a famous marketing director at Merck Philadelphia.
